Course Description

The focus of this seminar will be on the return to sport process – what to expect and how to optimize outcomes to get your athlete back in the game safely and quickly.

Topic 1: Functional Rehabilitation During the Return to Sport Phase after Knee Injury

Scott Lawrance, DHS, ATC, MSPT, CSCS brings a wealth of experience in helping injured athletes get back to competition. Scott is an Assistant Professor in the Athletic Training program at the University of Indianapolis and has worked with St. Vincent’s Sports Performance program. His presentation will focus on the aspects of a comprehensive return to sport program and how to transition from the early rehabilitation phase to getting athletes back in the game after knee injury or surgery

Topic 2: Returning to Sports after ACL Reconstruction: What is Possible?

Dr. Benner’s presentation will then describe the approach used at the Shelbourne Knee Center to determine readiness to begin the return to sport transition, discuss the current evidence in regards to return to sport rates, and identify risk factors of re-injury.

Course Objectives

  • Implement a functional return to sport progression for athletes after knee injury or surgery.
  • Identify specific impairments that commonly hinder an athlete’s ability to progress through the return to sport progression.
  • Determine a patient’s readiness for the advanced phases of rehabilitation and re-integration into sports activities.
  • Discuss the current return to sport rates described in the recent literature and the factors that may influence these statistics.
  • Identify factors that increase the risk of a 2nd ACL injury.

Continuing Education Credit

This course is approved for 2 contact hours by the NATA BOC and the Indiana Chapter of the APTA (Approval # 006987887C83). The Shelbourne Knee Center is an approved provider through the NATA BOC, allowing Athletic Trainers to obtain CEU credit for their attendance. Other health professionals should check with their governing association to determine if credit may be claimed.

Scott Lawrance

Scott Lawrance, DHS, ATC, MSPT, CSCS is an Assistant Professor in the Athletic Training program at the University of Indianapolis. Prior to making the transition into teaching, he practiced as an athletic trainer and physical therapist, including 5 years of experience on staff at the Shelbourne Knee Center. Scott currently serves as the President of the Indiana Athletic Trainers’ Association.

He has received numerous awards. He was named the Indiana Clinical Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2009 and was awarded the first ever National Distinction Award from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Young Professionals Committee. Scott won the Sports Medicine-Rehabilitation Specialist of the Year Award from the National Strength and Conditioning Association in 2010. He has also been honored by the University of Indianapolis as the Distinguished Young Alumni in 2011, the School of Education Teacher of the Year, and was a finalist for the University-wide Teacher of the Year in 2013.

Rodney Benner MD

Rodney W. Benner, MD is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at The Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee. He then completed a fellowship in knee surgery, sports medicine, and knee replacement at The Insall Scott Kelly Institute in New York City. This fellowship taught him the surgical techniques and patient care philosophies of Dr. John Insall, internationally regarded as the father of modern knee replacement. Dr. Benner has been involved with research at the Shelbourne Knee Center since his time as a medical student over a decade ago. He has published 8 journal articles and presented at a variety of regional and national meetings. Dr. Benner specializes in knee replacement, knee arthroscopy, knee ligament reconstruction, complex revision knee replacement, and non-surgical management of knee problems.
